About

I’m Robert Gourley — an Emmy Award-winning documentary director of photography based in Brooklyn, NY, available for travel.

I shoot verité documentary with a strong instinct for story. My approach is relationship-forward: I prioritize building trust so people can be the truest versions of themselves on camera. I often film with people inside of sensitive or difficult life moments. I work in a trauma-informed way while also protecting the factual integrity of a story that makes documentary powerful in the first place.

I bring an editor’s brain to set

Before I became a full-time freelance DP, I spent years as a video editor, and that experience shapes how I shoot every scene. Directors and producers often give me the feedback that I consistently capture what editors actually need — with coverage that’s thoughtful, and built to cut. I use my ears almost as much as I use my eyes, listening and tracking how a scene is evolving so I can find the emotional center and stay with it as the scene unfolds.

A DP who scales from indie to premium

I’m comfortable across budget ranges, from small, nimble crews to larger, branded productions. I can deliver an elevated image with minimal footprint — and I can plug seamlessly into bigger teams and workflows. For audio, I’m experienced working with sound recordists, and I can also run sound myself when a project calls for it.

Background

My visual storytelling career began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I was a Morehead-Cain Scholar and received national recognition from College Photographer of the Year and the Hearst Journalism Awards.

After working as a staff video journalist at the Los Angeles Times, I began freelancing in 2020 and have filmed in 10 countries — including inside the Fukushima nuclear plant, in cloistered monastic settings, at births in rural Ghana, and in other high-trust, high-stakes access environments. I’ve also interviewed cultural icons including Keegan-Michael Key, Salman Rushdie, and Billy Porter.

I’m a full member of the Documentary Cinematographers Alliance.

What it’s like to work together

If you’re considering me as your DP, here’s what you can expect:

  • A thoughtful prep call where I learn the context, intention, access considerations, and logistics

  • A calm, attentive presence on set — especially in emotionally sensitive situations

  • Coverage that’s crafted for story and post, not just “pretty images”

  • Flexible workflows depending on your team, schedule, and budget
