About
Robert Gourley is an Emmy Award-winning director of photography, cinematographer and producer based in Brooklyn, NY, who specializes in vérite documentary filmmaking with a penchant for intimate storytelling and small crews. He is dedicated to filming visuals that are both compelling and tailored to support each specific story that is being told. Robert diligently practices careful, active listening to guide his camera work and capture the heart of a scene. He is a full member of the Documentary Cinematographers Alliance.
Robert's visual storytelling career began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a Morehead-Cain Scholar and garnered national acclaim from College Photographer of the Year and the Hearst Journalism Awards. He studied environmental science and particularly enjoys working on projects about our collective relationship to the environment, though he also has a breadth of production experience across a broad array of topics.
After working as a staff video journalist at the Los Angeles Times, Robert embarked on a freelance career in 2020, contributing to television and film projects spanning the globe. He has worked in nine countries: from navigating the confines of a nuclear reactor containment vessel at the Fukushima nuclear plant, to interviewing cultural icons, to documenting monks in their cloister.
Robert’s most recent work has been featured on Hulu, HBO Max, PBS NewsHour, NOVA, CNN, and CuriosityStream. He’s always excited for the opportunity to collaborate on new projects and would love for you to reach out via email if you’re interested in working together!
